Are You Present?

If you are around young children, you have probabl y encountered this many times: 'Mama, Mama, look!' 'Papa, see my worm?' 'Why, Mama?' Chatter and questions galore; they can continue on all day. Most parents eventually resort to something like 'mm-hm' as a response as they are trying to get some things done- only to be met with more questions and requests!
Adults may have subtler versions of the same theme, but the underlying thirst for the other's Presence is still there. Perhaps it is human nature to enjoy a true meeting with another person.
There are many clues that let us know someone is 'there' with us: Direct eye contact, a genuine smile, perhaps a touch, and many more.
A lesser known, yet very powerful way to be present: Not only turning our chest towards the other person, but opening the area around the bottom of the sternum (breast bone), where the ribs create an open space in the front. It is roughly where the solar plexus is located deep within the body. Letting this area open like a lens, seems to satisfy the other person's craving for our presence.
It may only take a moment or two of turning towards your toddler and giving her your full attention, including that of your solar plexus area- and she may be 'full' for quite some time.
As teenagers and adults, we often unwittingly close this area upby crossing our arms or turning away. It may feel vulnerable to let it be open. Is it worth it? You be the judge of it.
Perhaps those around you are waiting to bathe in the presence of who you are. Opening the area around the solar plexus may let them see more of your highest self. And what if that gave him or her permission to do the same...?
Until next time, happy moving!
